The Effect of Corporate Strategy and Organizational Structure on the Relationship between Top Management Team Characteristics and Performance of Kenyan State Corporations

Editors:

Bwire Joseph Francis

ABSTRACT

The study will conceptualize the effect of corporate strategy and organizational structure on the relationship between Top Management Team (TMT) characteristics and performance of Kenyan state corporations. TMT characteristics have been posited to influence performance however: this position has been largely tautological with need for more empirical grounding. Although implied, the role of corporate strategy and organizational structure in the relationship between TMT and performance has been lacking. The study is contextualized in Kenyan state corporations in which these variables have strongly manifested in extant literature. The study’s main objective is to establish the effect of corporate strategy and organizational structure on the relationship between TMT characteristics and performance of Kenyan state corporations. The specific objectives are to: establish the influence of TMT characteristics on the performance of Kenyan state corporations; determine the effect of corporate strategy on the relationship between TMT characteristics and the performance of Kenyan state corporations; ascertain whether organizational structure mediates the relationship between TMT characteristics and the performance of Kenyan state corporations and finally, determine whether TMT characteristics, corporate strategy and organizational structure have a significant joint effect on the performance of Kenyan state corporations. The objectives have corresponding hypotheses as follows: TMT characteristics significantly influence the performance of Kenyan state corporations; corporate strategy mediates the relationship between TMT characteristics and performance of Kenyan state corporations; organizational structure moderates the effect of TMT characteristics on the performance of Kenyan state corporations and finally, TMT characteristics, corporate strategy and organizational structure jointly have significant effect on the performance of Kenyan state corporations. The hypotheses will be tested at 95 percent confidence level. Through a descriptive cross-sectional census survey, data will be obtained using a semi-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire will be administered through drop and pick to 187 Kenyan state corporations. Through multiple linear regression analysis using stepwise analyses findings will either be statistically significant or not. The study will further provide theoretical linkages of upper echelon, institutional and behavioral anchoring theories. The study will offer direction for day-to-day managerial practice as well as policy at both organizational and government levels. Out of the limitations of the study, areas for further research will be pointed out.
