RATIONALE

For those individuals entering the public relations arena, the public relations diploma offers an excellent academic background in public relations in addition to the skills needed to break into and advance in the public relation profession. For those with substantial experience, the course offers the ability to keep a breast of the developments in the industry.

Course Objectives

The purpose of Diploma in Public Relations is to train persons who wish to pursue a career in Public Relations.  The programme is also beneficial to professionals involved in executive-level management, marketing, public relations, and other areas impacting the communications and image of an organization.

The public relations is a multidisciplinary course and therefore, it borrows heavily from fields like, marketing, communication, management, psychology etc.

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-Face Mode

Lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

Open, Distance Learning, and e-Learning Mode

To be offered off-campus using a multi-media approach, including a variety of self-instructional print and video conferencing materials.

Blended Learning Mode

This is the use of combined face to face and open, distance learning and e-learning modes.

Diploma in Public Relations

  1. COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION.

3.1       The course is divided into three semesters of four (4) months.

       3.2       The students will take all eleven (11) course units.

 

       3.3       Each course unit will be covered in 45 contact hours of study

 

    1. The course will be delivered through lectures and tutorials.

 

    1.       The course will take one calendar year.

 

    1.       No candidate will be registered in this course for more than six semesters  

                         (equivalent to 2 years).

    1.       The students will be expected to carry out a Research Project which will

             constitute two units.

Diploma in Public Relations

The following shall be the minimum entry requirements for the Diploma in Public Relations.

4.1       KCSE Mean Grade C or above with C- in mathematics or Commerce, or Economics,                                                                                  

or Accounts, and C- in English or Kiswahili or a bridging course grade C- in 

Mathematics, or   Kiswahili or English from a recognized University.

4.2      KCE Div.III or above with a pass in Mathematics or Commerce or Accounts and a 

            pass in English or Kiswahili.

Or

 

4.3      ‘A’ level Certificate with at least one principal            

4.4       Professional Certificate from recognized Institutions i.e. Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), National Polytechnics, Bandari College, Kenya Medical Training Centre (KMTC), Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), Kenya Accounts & Secretarial Examination Board (KASNEB), School of Monetary Studies, Kenya Institute of Bankers, Kenya Co-operative college, Pitman level 1, University of Nairobi Extra-mural Courses or any other relevant Certificate that the University may recognize.

4.5       P1, S1 Certificate

4.6       A degree and above in any field from a recognized Senate

Diploma in Public Relations

The Diploma in Public Relations aims at: -

  • Training individuals who wish to pursue a career in public relations.
  • developing the human resources base needed for development.
  • creating a base for its graduate to proceed to higher business management professional courses in the university.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the public relations process and the ways in which it can be effectively used to accomplish organizational and individual goals; they will also be able to outline a public relations plan and to explain the strategies that will help them accomplish their objectives.
